Slow & Easy - 20080609 - 1 Run - 4.3 Miles

Evening Run

I packed up all my work clothes and running clothes for the week and set out for a nice run at 4:30 back home. It was nice to pass at the cars as they waited to exit the base in gridlock. It felt kind of liberating.

The run was good, mostly downhill, but very hot. I will have to make sure I am drinking enough water. Okinawa has a very high humidity and although the temperature does not get spectacularly high, about 95 degrees, the humidity sits at 95 to 100 percent. Also the low of the day is only 5 degrees or so from the high, so night time isn't much of a relief.

I made it home in about 37 minutes.

Slow & Easy: Run to Work - 20080606 - 2.6 Miles - Weekly Total: 8.1 Miles

Morning Run

I decided to force myself to run by leaving my car near work before going out. So I had a few beers in the evening and took a cab home. I was lucky enough to remember my car wasn't home in the morning so I got up right away and went on my run. It was a pretty easy run and actually a little short.

Currently, the closest gate for me to the base is closed to pedestrians so that the Marines can't walk to the bars. So I actually parked my car just off base so I could use this gate and drive into it.

Starting next week I plan to run to work every day. This will save me time because instead of driving back and forth and running, I am just running. Besides with many gate closures for construction it takes about as much time to drive as run.

Afternoon Run

I decided I had to run so I took the dogs out with me for an easy jog. I jogged them around a large dirt field near my house once with me. Afterwards, I tied them up in the shade while I ran for another 16 minutes. It was an easy 2 miles in 20 minutes but I at least I got a run in.

Slow & Easy: Enjoy Running - 20080602 - 1 Run - 3.4 Miles

Evening Run

I have been back home in Okinawa for a week from Thailand. It is time for me to start training again. I really don't like doing it at all. I finally realize I need to get back to enjoying my runs.

So I figured a nice beach run at sunset would help. It did. I went to the beach which was starting to clear out. This gave me the space to do a laps in the sand. I ran for 30 minutes and got in 3.4 miles. I stopped to help groups of people that were trying to take pictures of themselves on the beach. I took the pictures so they could get everyone in.

It was a good time and I think I am prepared to do more running now because of it. I just need to start logging again. I will be pulling up my old GPS records and get my mileage for the last two months. It isn't much, but I would like to keep from having a time lapse on this site.

Quality: Played Chicken and Won - 20080409 - 1 Run - 8.5 Miles

Evening Run

It was a sultry night. The clouds were low in the dark sky and seemed to blow by at over 100 mph. The wind was so high that the Chatan windmill had to be turned away from the South wind so it would damage the windmill...

It really wasn't that bad but there was a strange atmosphere where we all realized the summer is close and we are really getting a taste. Today's high was 82 and the humidity was pretty much the same so if felt like it was 90 at practice.

We were scheduled to do 20k at 5:38 pace followed by a quick 1k. Coming off injury I knew that I couldn't do that so I planned to shoot for 6 min/mile pace. That went out the window pretty quickly and I quickly dwindled to 6:30 pace in the heat as I watched Will & Hase lap me repeatedly.

I wasn't so surprised to see Will drop out from the heat. Not because he is bad, he is a spectacular runner, but because it was really hot and we haven't gotten used to it yet. But I was a little surprised when both Will & Hase dropped out just after half way. Before that I was considering dropping out at 8k but fought through it. I remembered doing 30 400s a few weeks ago and deciding I can complete any workout, so that was my plan.

I improved my pace to about a 6:10 after 12k and at 14k Hase stopped my from running. I listened because I knew he would keep insisting each lap that I stop if I kept going, but my attitude was that I was going to do it.

So I am happy. I didn't make a good pace but I came out of a funk and beat the distance.
